Oxford Reference Online resources

If you are studying any of our online short courses, you will have access to a selection of resources from Oxford University Press (OUP) for the duration of the course. This comprehensive collection contains over 250 dictionaries and reference titles, and nearly 9,000 full-text books, covering a wide range of subjects.

You must have cookies enabled on your browser in order to use the Oxford Reference Online resources. To check if you have cookies enabled visit the support details site. If you are unsure how to enable cookies on your browser you can find instructions for most browsers in this WikiHow article.

Sometimes you will find a direct link in your course material to a particular article or chapter from an Oxford Reference Online site, simply follow the links to access the resource.

You can also search or browse the collection from the course homepage at any time. To do this log in to Portal and go to your course homepage. From the homepage, click Oxford Reference Online from the block on the left of your screen. A new tab will open showing a list of available resources – click on any link to go to that site.

This will open a browsing session on the site which lasts 30 minutes. During this time, you can browse a huge selection of resources. If you wish to continue browsing after the session has ended, follow the link from your course again to open another session.

You may find it helpful to use the print, save or email features on each page in order to save any interesting materials you find.

Searching the available resources

If cookies are enabled in your browser you should be able to access the resources for up to 30 minutes. However, our subscription doesn’t cover everything. If you want to filter out any unavailable content (idicated by a Padlock), follow the instructions below.

Oxford Reference Online Core Collection

When searching the Oxford Reference Online Core Collection:

  • Perform a search using the Search bar
  • When the results are returned, go to the left hand side of the screen and check the ‘Unrestricted’ and ‘Free’ boxes
  • Click on Submit Query.

This will return all the material available to you and filter out any locked content.

Oxford Scholarship Online

When searching Oxford Scholarship Online:

  • Check the Oxford Scholarship Online radio button above the search bar is selected
  • Perform a search using the Search bar
  • When the results are returned, go to the left hand side of the screen and check the ‘Unlocked’, ‘Free’ and ‘Open Access’ boxes
  • Click on Submit Query.

This will return all the material available to you and filter out any locked content. If you still see a padlock, try closing down the browser tab and follow the link again from your course to open a new connection to the site before trying the search again.

I’m still having trouble accessing the resources
